Research Into Documentary

After our first session on documentary we have been asked to go away and research about the chosen character we would like to base our documentary around. As my uncle is a dedicated Biker with Harley Davidson’s, leathers and beards fitting the bill. I know he must have some stories from events such as the Bulldog Bash which have stirred up a lot of controversy from the biker gang The Hells Angels. After researching about the Bulldog Bash violence and constant police battles I stumbled upon something/someone that interested me.

Now if this article caught my attention then it would certainly catch yours, and would make a strong documentary.

The article is about a BBC Journalist called Steve Jones who had worked with the BBC for nearly 20 years. little did they know at the weekends he moonlighted as the Hells Angels Press Officer, consequently breaking the BBC’s code of conduct.

Echo as his known to his biker friends was even filmed and recorded by various BBC teams at the Bulldog Bash, this immediately caused colleagues to question his activities and an inquest was launched into his roles outside the BBC.

Steve “Echo” Jones has covered a lot of the Hells Angels press events in the past including an interview about the horrific shooting of Gerry Tobin by rival gang The American Outlaws.

There was a brief interview with Steve “Echo” Jones about these events that took place  on august the 12th 2007.

I think a documentary on Steve “echo” Jones would be a great watch to get his feelings on the shooting of Gerry Tobin, the Bulldog Bash and his dismissal from the BBC.

  1. Matt,

It’s a great subject and I can see why you have gone for Steve Jones but does your uncle not make a better character (access & intimacy are important considerations) also his story has not been told? If you rehash the Jones story what’s your angle – would you consider using both men?
